I ignored the call the first time they rang as I wasn't sure who the caller was. I then checked here and saw the confusion as to whether or not it's a scam number, so tweeted British Gas to ask if it actually is them or not. They have responded to say that actually it's not one of their numbers so not to answer.

My mobile provider lists this as a scam call. Am on British Gas priority register so have been answering due to online investigations indicating BG. This is not the way to treat customers so am now going to block the number.

This number had called before. Man wasn't very clear said he was calling from British gas. Asked me to confirm who I was. Knew the date of my last boiler service, knew the boiler was over 10 years old, knew the boiler did not need replacing. Offered a no obligation visit to discuss upgrade. Told him that both engineers had given the boiler a clean bill so didn't need an upgrade. Spoke about winter coming and needed to make sure the boiler would be sufficient. I reminded him that the engineers were more than competent and neither of them suggested I needed a new boiler so why did he need to come around and discuss it with me. He asked me if I was sure then hung up. Thought it was a strange call. Can see someone else agreeing to a visit and then buying a new boiler. Don't think they were from British gas.

This number called me today. He said he was calling from British Gas and it was about my homecare products. Know my road name and asked me to confirm the last part after he said first part. the said to check bank details he will give me last 4 digits of account number. He was correct. Also knew when the boiler was installed and how i paid for it. I would say it's legit but if you don't feel comfortable, ask them to write to you with the query or email you to the address on record.

Had a call saying boiler was over 10 years old and they could provide an inspection and a no obligation quote for a replacement. Contacted British Gas straight after via their site and they confirmed it is one of their numbers.

Female called claiming from British Gas regarding fitting a smart meter. Wouldn't elaborate on the property in question, instead asked me to identify it!! I said, surely you've contacted me you should be able to confirm the details, and also said you could be anyone claiming to be from British Gas! I asked her to confirm which property address she was referring to, her reply: thank you that'll be all!! ****

First called me 2 days ago. Picked up and after a pause a lady said that my meters needed upgrading to smart ones. Told her I had previously made it clear that I do not want a smart meter fitted. She politely said goodbye. Yesterday the same number called again but I did not pick up. This morning, yet another call. This time I did pick up. Same story as first conversation...long pause...they want to fit smart meter...don't wasn't it only this time I made it clear that this wasn't the first time they have called me this week and not to contact me again. Sounded like the same lady as before (possibly Indian accent) and she was still polite given that I was being well mannered but more firm with my response this time.

Man called, asking for Mr Samuel and when I said that wasn't me, he asked who I was. Refused to give him my name as he should know who he's calling if, as he claimed, he was calling from my supplier, British Gas. I told him my house was electric only and he told me that my meters need changing. Clearly not as I'm not Mr Samuel! I asked if he was a salesman and he said yes so I put the phone down on him.

Asian lady hard to understand. As we get many Asian speaking ladies pretending to be BT etc I would not risk getting involved. Looking at other posts it could be a company working for British Gas but I wont take any chances. If they want to contact me they can do it it writing. ps. If they want me to have a smart meter to reduce their costs, they can reduce my bills first.
