very rapid Indian accented English . had my name and the number appeared to be a genuine HSBC one ** BUT*** I didn't answer and checked online with direct chat feature on my HSBC app and they (HSBC)were very concerned as there was NO records on my account that HSBC were calling me and told me not to give away any personal info to this caller as it appears to be a high grade scam.

HSBC follow-up call that was expected, nothing to raise my suspicions. Caller knew information without me giving any over. I suspect the Indian accent is a red flag for some of you but really, it's not the callers fault that, is it!?

Got a call from this number - it was a lady with an Indian Accent, she then proceeded to ask for my boss stating she was from HSBV Bank, I questioned her again and she again reiterated that she was from HSBV Bank. Having worked at HSBC myself, I told her that she's a scam caller as the Bank's name is HSBC. She said she was genuine and had a cheque in hand to query about. I then told her to give me the cheque number in question and she proceeded to tell me the cheque number and the amount. That is when I told her again that this must be a scam as I was trained at HSBC and we were told to always run security questions and also ask the customer whether he was in a position to go on with the call. She was also going to run the query with me albeit I am not the account holder! When I pointed out she was a scammer, she hung up abruptly. It does seem that a cheque was then not honoured on the director's accout, however if HSBC are now employing people who do not even get the bank's name right and don't even ask security questions, then definitely they need to have a serious reshuffle of how things should be done.

I had something similar. HSBC now outsource a lot of their services to India including processing payments. I could hear this ladies husband in the kitchen clattering pan and motorbikes going past her window. I 100% thought it was a scam so I refused to confirm any details but got a call from the UK relationship manager to say it was genuine!!! Worlds gone mad.

HSBC, definitely, but is part of their phone system used by the whole business. In my case it was a business call from someone I know in a non customer facing department (in fact, not even the HSBC retail bank). That said, ANY number can be spoofed (so we all need to be wary of any call). Presumably those getting scam calls had this number spoofed.

I paid cheques to my account in branch but left off acc no. They rang me,had already I'D the account but needed to confirm it was me. They had detail, asked for missing details - nothing of use without what they already had. Completely satisfied it was legit.

If it were HSBC, it is suspicious they didn't leave a message. When I rang their official number, they confirmed that it was not theirs, and they didn't call me. This number is now apparently registered to an individual called 'James Bank'.

SCAM CALL (Scam call) reported by


English accent by lady caller to my home phone proposing to be from HSBC bank. She got my first name slightly wrong which raised my suspicions immediately. She said she was calling from HSBC Bank and was I happy to find that my local branch of HSBC had now closed it's counters and asked if I was happy to now bank online. I queried the phone number she had called from and told her that it had come up as international she brushed this statement aside and was going to carry on when I interupted her again to say I was not even a customer of HSBC and I never talk to any bank over the phone and I always go into branch to talk. She then put the phone down. I have since called my local branch of HSBC direct who have confirmed that NEVER do they call to check if their customers know about counters closing. This (HSBC have confirmed) is definitely a SCAM caller and not HSBC. DO NOT DISCUSS ANYTHING WITH ANYONE ON THE PHONE FROM THIS NUMBER.

I was called by this number today. The caller advised that she was looking to speak with my grandma, who I am power of attorney for. She advised it was her bank and that it was nothing to worry about. I advised that I had POA and she put me on hold to check something. She then asked me for my details, which I advised I was unhappy to provide as she hadn't event old me which bank she was calling from. She then said she couldn't tell me as I had to answer the security questions first! Then got fairly abrupt. so I finished the call.

Hijacked Caller-ID - this is the HSBC number but It is now common for scammers to Hijacked the Caller-ID. It purports to come from HSBC and has their Caller-ID but this has been hijacked. BBC Radio 4 Money Box programme had an item on this and we are now told NOT TO TRUST CALLER-ID. They have been aware of this for a while but have not worked out a solution yet.

Called by someone claiming to be from HSBC (Indian accent) regarding a PPI claim and a change in process. Very polite. Asked me to confirm my personal details, which I refused to do as it was unsolicited. I asked her to send me the information/request in a letter as this was unsolicited. She said they do not send letters, so the call was ended. I called HSBC to confirm and they have no record of the call.
