Unwanted Survey Call (Survey) reported by David Cheshire
Caller said they were from Motif and had been asked to do a survey by a "financial services company" that my wife had an account with and had contacted recently. He sounded genuine, but scammers are not going to make any money if they sound like crooks, are they. When questioned further he offered to give me a telephone number to call to check that the call was genuine. How this could possibly do such a thing he didn't say, but I told him that I was not interested in making any calls at his request (which could easily have been to a premium rate number). I informed the person that we did not give permission for our telephone number to be given out for this sort of purpose and requested they make a note of this. If I find out who is the "financial services company" that gave out our number, any accounts with them will be closed forthwith. The reason that our number is ex-directory and registered with the TPS is because we don't want to receive time wasting calls like this. If it was a genuine survey company, they should have the courtesy to check these registrations and respect our wishes, not just call anyway because it might be legal. If it was genuine, then I still do not want to be called out of the blue like this; there are far too many requests for "feedback" and "surveys" these days, it seems every time one buys anything the vendors take that as carte blanche to bombard you with emails and telephone calls.
2
phil
Unfortunately they can still ex- directory number as TPS is there to prevent unsolicited sales calls. A market research survey is not a sales call and as they are calling the company's customers it doesnt come under 'unsolicited' since it is not unreasonable for an organisation to contact their customers. It's annoying but if you don't want to take part then I'm sure the calls aren't mandatory, so just hang up
Alistair
Also I'm sorry but nearly all of your points are completely invalid. Customer feedback is one of the most important aspects of a organisation. Now I'm pretty sure you'll agree but banks aren't just any random company wanting feedback. They do a lot of vitally important things for you.. if you dont want a good service then by all means keep doing what you are doing David. The only thing time wasting is your ability to respect someones job and also the bank that you are at. Do not belittle something that you do not care to understand. Thanks.

Telephone Preference Service?? (Unsolicited call) reported by Stephen M
If as suggested above this is a legitimate company requesting survey feedback should they still be able to call a TPS registered number? Their whole methodology lends to people distrusting them.
4
NoName
Yes they are allowed to call TPS numbers as it is not a sales call and only for market research. Just the rules unfortunately.
Adam
Hi Stephen, I was going to try an explain this to you however the MOTIF website words it a lot better. Here is a direct quote: "When our clients provide us with a sample of their customers, it means we may contact customers who are registered with the Telephone Preference Service (TPS) or who are listed as ex-directory. There is no requirement to screen research samples against the preference services (such as the Telephone Preference Service) when conducting market research. TPS is there to prevent unsolicited sales calls. A market research survey is not a sales call and as the programme contacts existing client customers it therefore does not come under the generally understood meaning of 'unsolicited' since it is not unreasonable for an organisation to contact its customers." Hopefully this helps you understand it, cheers

Surely its a breach of data protection to pass customer details to any third party

Called on behalf of Halifax (Survey) reported by Mark
Survey RE Halifax insurance i recently took out. Never asked for a single piece of personal information so no reason to think it was a scam. A useless one if so!

Dale
They now know you bank with Halifax. Not useless at all if they can now target you with focused scams.
Adam
@Dale
Halifax give this information to market research agencies to carry out the customer feedback surveys. This is so the data from their costumers is unbiased. You can check the Motif website (www.thisismotif.com), or you can search them on the Market Research Society website to check that Motif is a legitimate company. The calls are not scams, they are a way of conducting genuine market research. The calls aren't mandatory anyways so you can always decline
Martin
@Adam, if this was a genuine call then your answer is quite legitimate. But please explain how these calls for the "Halifax Survey" are being received by people who do not use the Halifax at all?
You can check Motif websites all you want but when modern day scammers, using technology, can contact you and make the number appear to be the banks number, so if you're familiar with your banks phone number you will obviously think it is the bank, How is your Motif website combating this then? Plus, many others have said when they answer they are told "This is from your financial advisor" not mentioning Halifax at all. But you clearly think this is a phone number to trust Adam. I just hope they never call you then
Adam
@Martin
Hi Martin, I am happy to answer these questions as I have worked for a few Market Research agency's in the past so hopefully I'll be able to explain things a bit clearer.
- Firstly the number that Motif calls from is an 0800 number. This is not a number from the bank and it would never come up on your phone as the name of the bank they're conducting the survey on behalf of. It's an 0800 number just because they're calling from a call centre.
- Secondly as Motif will be given a sample of numbers from the bank, they have no choice as to which numbers they call, they have to call each number they have been given by the bank. Let's take Halifax for example, if Motif calls someone who says they are not a costumer of Halifax then that is at no fault of Motifs as they have no input as to which numbers they are calling. As the survey is not mandatory then they can end the call there and Motif will apologise for calling them. This can sometimes happen when banks make a mistake with the numbers in the sample (perhaps using an old number or perhaps the costumer has recently left that bank). Or this can sometimes happen if the person on the phone doesn't realise they have a very small product with the bank (such as a simple credit card or insurance) or perhaps they have a joint account. This can sometimes then lead to the costumer believing the call is not real when in actual fact they have just not realised that they're a small costumer (believe me this happens all the time)
- Just to clarify, the staff at Motif (or any market research agency) will NEVER say they're calling directly from the bank. They will introduce themselves as working for Motif on behalf of the bank as they're the 3rd party in charge of the costumer feedback surveys.
- Another point to add is that Motif don't just do surveys for Halifax, they will call on behalf of a wide range of clients for example other banks or financial providers such as pension providers.
- Lastly the only reason Mot
Adam
Sorry I realised the last part of my message got cut off so here is the last point.
Lastly the only reason Motif will say they're calling on behalf of a their financial provider will be because the person they're talking to hasn't confirmed their identity. Motif can only reveal the name of the client (bank or financial provider) they're calling on behalf of once they have confirmed they're speaking to the correct person. This is due to DPA, it would be breaking Data protection if Motif said the name of the bank to any random person on the phone. This process is put in place to protect costumer confidentiality.
I hope this helps to clear up any questions you had but if you have any more then just drop another message on this website, cheers
Martin
@Adam, thanks, it does clear up some issues. But if this is legit then when they call why do they not leave a message? Surely this would be a better way to conduct business rather than just cold call someone and rudely ring off.
They called me again today whilst I was at work (last week they also called me when I was at work) and no message left. It appears that they are demanding that I should answer when they want to talk to me and, surely as a CUSTOMER, I should be able to speak with them when I want to. Not that I would do a survey as I find them absolutely pointless (if I wasn't happy with the service I'd go somewhere else and if the organisation is just using a 3rd party to check on how their staff are doing then I certainly wouldn't want to work for a place that treated me that badly and I'd feel very sorry for a staff member who's boss can't be bothered giving an employee the time to talk with them about their job).
I do feel that, as I didn't answer the call last week that alone should be the message to Motif that I am not interested and now I feel they are just harassing me
Adam
@Martin
Hi Martin, I'm glad I managed to clear a few things up with you. And I'll hopefully be able to answer these questions as well. Firstly the calls that Motif are making are not COLD calls as they are being paid by the bank to conduct these calls. They are market research calls and as the programme contacts existing client customers it therefore does not come under the generally understood meaning of 'unsolicited' since it is not unreasonable for an organisation to contact its customers. I definitely agree with your point about leaving a message, I am actually not sure if other market research agencies leave a message so perhaps that would be something they should consider in the future. Perhaps it may be because they're calling from a call centre and the fact it can be for different agencies maybe makes it hard to have a voicemail. Especially since the telephone interviewers will have a target to reach so it would take up more time to say a voicemail message after each call. However I am not sure on that one. But I do 100% agree that there should be a voicemail of some kind. Lastly I believe that if you don't answer the call the first time then they call back within 3hrs or just another random time. This is because obviously the person making the call doesn't know if you're just busy or you had your phone on silent, so they call again to try and get your feedback. This also means that all costumers have a chance to give their opinions even if they miss that first call. Now I know you've mentioned that you don't want to do the survey so the easiest option would just be to block the number and they won't disturb you again. It's really that easy. Hopefully this helps a bit as well, any more questions and I'd be happy to try answer them, cheers

bank survey (Financial services) reported by John Conner
I recieved a call from this number asking me to confirm my name, which i was hesitant on doing. She said they were calling on behalf of my bank so i said which bank and she would not tell me unless i confirmed i was the named person she was asking for, after i said yes that is me they said did i visit the branch and then asked me questions about the service how long i waited in the queue and how i felt about the member of staff it was all totally ligitimate and i didnt feel that i had to contact the bank to confirm as they did not ask me for any details just my opinions about the staff member. It was a new member of staff at the branch and so i guess they wanted to make sure they were working well. At first i thought it was a scam due to them asking me to confirm my name and saying they are from my bank but then i realised they have to do that as they breach customer confidentiality and with all these scams being so prominent i assumed they were scammers too but not all are. I spoke with a lovely lady from london named Asma Begum.

Genuine market research (Survey) reported by 86.156.208.xxx
If you have been called by Motif on this number then it is NOT a scam, purely all they want is feedback on the service you have recieved from a specific company. Please don't spread nonsense as they are only trying to do their job! Motif is an independent market research company that have many clients that they do feedback surveys on behalf of. They can also not say the name of the bank or company until they know it is the customer they are speaking to purely due to customer confidentiality reasons which I'm sure you'd agree with because you wouldn't want any random person knowing your details, isn't that obvious.

Tay
I been called persistly last few days all times of day to pick up call today someone asking me confirm name ... without even giving reason for the call! Wants to know my personal information but won't answer basic question. This number is a scam and should avoid it. As I questioned the lady who claimed her name was Libna Jasmin she suddenly hang up phone going missing. This is a scam and no one needs to talk to them if you have problem with your bank it should be the bank contacting you not these Guys. If they do then the bank has breached your basic human rights and data ma protection passing you information to other 3rd parties
Alistair
I am sorry that that has been happening to you, did the person introduce themself as from motif?? As they should happily tell you the reason for the call.
Alistair
Also to answer your other question, the whole point of a market research companies is to phone up on behalf of the bank as the bank or company has many other responsibilities to look after. The bank does not breach your basic human rights getting a company, specifically designed to get customer feedback, to ask how their service etc. There are many reasons why so please educate yourself before giving false information and making the telephone interviewers job much more difficult by creating a negative atmosphere towards customer feedback surveys.
