Phone numbers like this can be faked, always best to call your bank back directly. Caller claimed to be investigating fraud and initially asked some basic questions about account balances. Then got into some pseudo science about running virus checker on bank profile until finally asking for login name at which point hung up. First direct need to discourage taking any call now that numbers can be scammed and only allow contact from you to them.

First Direct is my bank and the number is stored in my phone so when i received this call i thought i was speaking to First Direct - they told me there had been fraud on my account and i got stitched up so badly because i was in a panic about fraud on my account. They already had some of my information and i foolishly filled in the blanks that allowed them to scam me. It's a total disaster and I don't know if i will get my money back.

First Direct, or they said they were. It's a genuine number for First Direct but a scammer was on the end of the line. She came out with the line of 'there's unusual activity on your account.' She had the usual potty mouth from me.

came up as first direct phone number , was told I had suspicious transactions on my account, , went through my transactions, was very convincing, changed my pass code and settings , became suspicious only after and rang FD who confirmed they didn't call me and was a scam as a loan was taken out and transactions made i knew nothing of .

'Steve' from first direct fraud dept called asking about charges/suspicious activity on my account. He had my name address etc but then asked for the answer to my security question and to generate a security code on my app - became suspicious and hung up.

Had a call on 16th May from Number which appeared to be First Direct. Had certain details about me and said they were calling from the FD Fraud Dept due to suspicious activity on my account. Asked me to confirm some details but something about it didn't sound quite right. It was a nicely spoken young man but I said I didn't believe the call was genuine - he told me to check the phone number that had come up and it did match the FD number. Again, I told him I didn't believe he was from the Fraud Dept at FD and I had read about number's being 'spoofed' - at that point he hung up. I noticed afterward that the number had a + in front - reported it to FD but feel they are not doing enough to protect their customers. Very worrying that these scammers can get so much personal info and then try to trick you into revealing more. Please be aware.

First Direct's Number Has Been Cloned (Scam call) reported by


This is First Direct's legit number but it has been cloned. Received a call from this number from someone purporting to be from First Direct. They had various details about me and the same script, security questions and even the same hold music as First Direct. They proceeded to scam me and another payee who I am linked to and who also banks with First Direct. First Direct acknowledged that this is a problem but have not publicised the fact that any call from this number could be fraud. The only way to avoid it is to set up a safe word with them - something they don't usually set up. Reported to the police. Please report and publicise as this is a big flaw with an otherwise great bank.

So, this really is First Direct's customer services tel no. But call them directly, don't just assume that because this number is showing its really them. I've now had three separate calls from this number from people purporting to be investigating fraud on my account but really just fraud calls.

SCAM inbound call! (Scam call) reported by


SCAM! Upon answering, a man spoke in Scottish accent with slightly wrong info claiming from Fraud dept, I was 80% sure that was a scammer. His was persistent to ask me to verify my detail (told him "no"), then he insists the displayed number is enough to assume he is real (told him "no you are not"), when I keep dragging on he then said he will close and suspend my account if I don't comply and confirm (I said "you can't but go ahead"). PHISHING SCAM couldn't be more obvious. The joy of having very tiny amount in the bank account. Still, I called back First Direct on a different phone to check and confirmed nothing would primpt for First Direct to call me. I was right, it was s phising call.

Number came up as First Direct and I was told there was suspicious activity on my account. They could help but first needed to check some security details. They gave me part of my email address and a multiple choice of the rest. First Direct have never asked me a security question like that so I paused a moment and said I'm going to call you back. They hung up. FD confirmed it was a scam call.

Scam caller purporting to be First Direct Fraud Department (Scam call) reported by


CAUTION - I received a call from this number from a guy claiming to be First Direct Fraud. It seemed legitimate as it came up on my phone as an incoming call on the actual FD number and he was able to give me the last four digits of my account number. He claimed that a suspicious looking direct debit had been set up and wanted to check some of my details. Something about the whole conversation didn't feel quite right and when I asked if he could call me back on my home phone number he started to babble about not having the information on file. I put the phone down and called First Direct myself to check if there was an issue. After speaking to an actual FD employee it turns out that there isn't an issue and the call was an attempted scam and unnervingly scammers are able to make it look like they're phoning from FD and can have your bank details. One of the biggest giveaways is apparently that on an actual call with FD you will always be asked for two security questions before discussing anything to do with the account. The fraudulent caller did not go through this process and would no doubt have moved the conversation towards trying to coax sensitive information from me. In summary be very careful, even if the phone number looks correct and the caller has some of your details, exercise caution and know that an actual FD caller will want you to verify your identity with security questions. The scammers out there really know what they're doing now so be careful!

BEWARE - number can be cloned! They told me a direct debit had been set up to leave my account at midnight for £3500. When I asked how I knew it was my bank (First Direct) calling, he gave me my mother’s maiden name and told me to check the phone number they were calling from matched the number of the back of my debit card. It did. They clearly cloned the number. I only checked because I googled the number and found a negative review here. He started to put pressure on me when I said I’d call my bank to make sure; he said I’d just get back through to him and if I wouldn’t be entitled to a refund unless I acted now. When I told him that was ridiculous he used an expletive. I hung up and called my bank who told me there were no issues and no direct debits. If I hadn’t found the review here I could have been fooled. Be careful out there.
