Cold called and asked for details just to speak. Which I refused pointing out they were a likely scammer. Thye called twice. Ended the calls. Found out later it really was HMRC. Quite disgusting behaviour acting like the worst scammers by them. Doing this before sending a letter or emailing and only a few days after the payment was due is woeful behaviour. In fact on this occasion the payment had been made on time but there was a typo on the reference so they hadn't allocated it correctly. I called HMRC myself to deal with this, I would never use this number.

I too thought this was a scam at first , but my situation has been going on for years, and on further investigation, it turns out it is legit. So despite other comments below, this number is genuinely from HMRC debt management. It is completely separate to the self employment department within HMRC, and the debts are a separate thing but associated with self employment, in my case anyway. I owe a fine for incorrectly filing my tax form from many years ago. I know this number to be genuine as I was passed onto this department from the normal HMRC and the same lady has rang me from this number. It is genuine, but it seems the debt department don't correspond with the rest of HMRC!!

Def a scam. Recieved a call from this no and didnt answer. When I rang it back was an automated message stating it was HMRC. I rang HMRC on their verified number and they told me they would never call only send letters and that i should report the number to the police. Do not fall for this!

Phone call from lady called Nav stating I owe a paye penalty from 2013 when advised I was not self employed then stated she could not action nothing as only just assigned the case called HMRC on correct number self assessment have no notes on file which she said she would put and no record of that number listed on their internal directory and checked with manager they advised this was a scam call
