reading the above comments I'm not entirely sure whats happening here. someone called claiming to be from HMRC (it is possible as their staff are incredibly thick) and asked me to start confirming my details with security questions, I asked what for and was told it was regarding my last payment. I'v never made a direct payment to HMRC, I'm employed on the PAYE system. so I'm glad I gave no details and told them to go scam someone else. if HMRC really need to get in touch then they know my address and there must be someone there that can write

I thought this was a scam but on returning the call HMRC enquiry department couldn't tell me why they called until put through to Debt Management team where they explained the call reason and it was in fact legit.

HMRC have new phone systems. This means that outgoing calls will be made under 03002003884 and not withheld. It's a generic outbound line. If you are in doubt, call the general helpline and they will confirm it for you. If you call the number 03002003884 back you'll just have an automated message saying HMRC have tried to call you and they'll try again later before hanging up. NOT a scam.

Asked to speak to the person who deals with the VAT invoice. If it was HMRC they wouldn't ask for that. And do NOT cold call. ???????? Nice try. Even with fake reviews.

Called asking to speak to the director of the company I work for. Couldn't even get the name of the business right. I asked if the director was expecting the call to which they said "No, he isn't. I have another number i will try." Called three times today from variations of this number.
