McAfee LiveSafe installation (Scam call) reported by


When installing Mcafee livesafe on my new computer, got the screen as described in the packaging, but then a pop up said a technician would call in 5-10 minutes to help me install. This number was used to call. They asked me to give access to allow them to set it up, and then after a number of error screens appeared tried to tell me that my computer was not legitmately licensed and was missing Microsoft Silverlight - took me to a screen showing a number of elements not running. Said they could install for £40. I explained I would not pay any more money and would go back to the store as they had said it was ready to go - at which point they quickly exited my screen and hung up. Watch out for this. When I spoke to Curry's they explained that this was a scam.

This happened to us today 16/5/17 whilst trying to install Mcafee Livesafe security on my 2 month old computer. The trial security ran out & I was attempting to install the McAfee disc, purchased at the time of sale of the new laptop. A pop-up box appeared & said a technician would contact me as I was experiencing problems. This happened immediately, the lady on the other end of the phone asked for access to my computer, which I gave, as I had no reason to suspect a scam at that point. Anyway, to cut a long story short, they asked for £50 for a technician to clean the laptop, (they said it had accumulated a lot of junk etc that was slowing the laptop down) I refused, they then said that they could do it for £30, again I refused & said I needed to take it back to the shop I purchased the laptop/McAfee disc from. They gave me the number of 08000885029 to contact them again if I changed my mind. I have since had 8 calls from an unknown number in the last 2 hrs!!
