I was call-screening my parents phone so I didn't answer the call and just let the answering machine record a message. When I played it back I could hear someone breathing every now-and-then, so there was obviously someone there live, ready to try and scam me if I'd picked-up the phone. Unfortunately for them, when this person breathed a couple of times it actually cut-out important bits of the number they were leaving via a recorded message, so I couldn't call them back if I wanted to. Shame that! Still, I did 1471 quickly to find-out who'd called and obtained the correct number, which led me here (advice: never call them back), but in the meantime I'd already searched the internet for the wording used in the automated computer-spoken message, and it appears that this is a scam. Indeed, I believe that the person on the other end would have tried to pressure me into paying something if we'd spoken or if I had called them back. The real UK Revenue are not going to leave you a message sternly saying: 'There is a serious lawsuit filed against your name' and then something about legal consequences; a debt collection company might do that, but not HMRC. For one it is arguably threatening behaviour plus the use of the word lawsuit is American, which is where this scam originates from apparently. It's also quite telling that at the end of the message they are trying to worry old or vulnerable people by re-iterating: 'This message is for YOU'. Bull. It's for anyone stupid enough to engage with them; please don't do that. If you owe HMRC anything they will likely write to you, not cold call you. My pensioner parents may have more concerned about this than me, but I am fairly confident that this is a scam and therefore you should avoid talking to these people and just put the phone down if they do actually get through to you.

They said they were I think from tax and customs and if I didn't call back serious action would be taken. I'm a pensioner. What was it all about. Phoned the no no answer

I don't know who these scum bags are working on behalf of but this type of call is one of the most insidious I've come across. They called my grandparents (70&69yo) this morning and played a recorded message which stated they are from Revenue and Customs claiming that my grandparents have committed some kind of tax fraud and have a law suit pending against them and that if they didn't call them back immediately to discuss it they would be liable to prosecution and hefty fines!! I've been educating them about scam calls for a while and I always answer calls when I'm at their house so my grandad didn't fall for it. He left the phone off the hook all day so I would be able to retrieve their number when I got here. Hence why I'm warning others on here. I'll be posting the same message across as many msg boards and forums as I can to get the word out. I will also be reporting the number to action fraud. If you are reading this as a result of being called by the same number, I suggest you report it to them as well. Only when enough of us report it will it be looked into. This type of scam is one of the worst, using fear to trick pensioners into parting with what little money they have and quite frankly it's disgusting!!

Female caller stated she was from HMRC and that tax was owed unless they were paid then court action would start. Asked for payment in iTunes vouchers! Reported to Police and confirmed scam
